If you Google the dictionary definition of peace you may see it given as : “freedom from disturbance; tranquillity “, ” a state or period in which there is no war, or a war has ended.”
God is the God of Peace. ” Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.” Roman’s 15:33
Jesus Christ said to His disciples: “Peace I give unto you. My peace I give unto you, not as the world gives give I unto you.” John 14:27
Christ is the Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6. So, ” Let not your heart be troubled; neither let it be afraid.”
Peace is foremost a state of being. To be at peace is to have that calmness or tranquillity of mind and heart, which cannot be disturbed. It comes from knowledge and from love.
Knowledge of who you are and that God is. Love of self and of God.
Further, knowledge that you are loved – by God and by his Creation. Loved by others, your fellow men. For if you love your self, you must know that others love you. Somewhere there is someone who loves you. And G-d loves you.
“And the God of Peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.” Romans 16:20
“The peace of G-d which passes (surpasses) all understanding, guard your heart and mind in [the knowledge and love of G-d and of His Son] Christ Jesus our Lord.” Philippians 4:7
When you meet someone you usually refer to them by name. If you have never met them before you usually ask them their name so that when you address them or want to get their attention you can; just by saying their name. They know that you are speaking to them specifically.
What about God?
For those of us who believe that God is, how do we get his ‘attention’ when we want to speak to him specifically?
More importantly, do we know whether our way of addressing him is indicative of our present desire? For instance, is there a hint to him when we say “Father” rather than “Almighty God”? i.e. Do we want God to hear us and be with as Father, when we are desirous of the Almighty God in our current situation?
In whatever way, and by whatever name, when we pray or talk to God we must remember that the name of God is….Holy.
Whether we are addressing Him as friend, lover, saviour, deliverer, teacher, healer, or god, we MUST remember and be conscious in our hearts that his name isholy.
“Eternal God help us to know you and your name. Help us, O Father, to know you to whom we pray, and to whom we talk in our distress, and joy. In so doing Holy Lord, make us more aware of your holiness and the holiness of your name. Amen.”
